SkyTrak and Garmin’s R10 are two of the most common first launch monitors for home simulators, but they work very differently. The R10 is a small radar that sits behind you; the SkyTrak sits beside the ball. That one difference decides which rooms each fits.

This comparison uses SkyTrak’s current ST MAX (the SkyTrak+ was listed as unavailable at Rain or Shine Golf when we checked). Prices were checked October 10, 2026. We haven’t tested either unit.

Which needs less room?

The SkyTrak. Because it sits beside the ball, SkyTrak says it saves the up-to-8 ft that other launch monitors need behind the hitting area, and it calls a 17 ft room depth comfortable (SkyTrak). The R10 needs 6–8 ft behind the ball plus at least 8 ft from ball to net — about 14–16 ft before swing room and screen clearance.

The trade-off: a beside-the-ball unit has to be moved for left-handed golfers, and SkyTrak suggests an extra 1–2 ft of width for mixed households.

Software

Rain or Shine Golf lists the ST MAX with SkyTrak’s own practice and course software. Garmin lists E6 Connect compatibility for the R10, and GSPro’s FAQ lists the R10 as supported. GSPro runs on Windows only.

Who should buy which?

  • Buy the Garmin R10 if your room is deep (about 15 ft or more), you want the lowest cost, and you’ll take it to the range.
  • Buy the SkyTrak ST MAX if your room is short, you want a beside-the-ball unit with a long-running software ecosystem, and you’ll budget for a membership.

Bottom line

Room depth decides it. In a deep garage the R10 does the job for a fraction of the price. In a shorter room the SkyTrak ST MAX fits where the R10 can’t.
